The inportant things what I have learned.

In class. students discuss a lot of things relatived with what we write down. So, it was interesting in participating in talking our matter. However, the only thing i miss is that I should have talked about things more joining class argument bringing about better grade in participation points. I totally like to write down beliving and doubting essay which was decribing one matter in different viewpoints and talked about proper idea to support my argument. Also, there are a lot of works in classes I think one thing I have learned the most is research paper which I focuse on my whole power and attention. We learned hot to make Works Cited page which is really important to make research papers and someone came to our class to teach our subject.
I have one thing I still don't make sence why we put our responce on summary papers.I think I misunderstand what you want during summary paper time. So, it resulted me in getting low grade for summary paper. However, i entirely liked to take this class because I learned a lot of the way to summarize, organize and equate in this class.

Daniel

I need to speak with you about my paper. Can you please email me at 10587232@uvlink.uvu.edu or check your UVU email to read my message. Thank you! Jaricka

What I have learned

Last semester I had taken ENGH 0990, which helped me tremendously. I cannot say that I can understand English perfectly now, however, I can read and write better, and I am still learning it; I am sure I will get better in the future. For example, before last semester, I was really afraid of reading and writing somehow, but through the efforts of last semester, I am not scared of reading and writing gradually, also I have learned some skills about grammar, format and how to organize an essay. The most important thing I have learned during this semester is that I have learned so many things such as how to do visual rhetorical analysis and research paper. One thing I think I improved most is to write the introduction and thesis; I was always struggle in how to start a paper. Moreover, I also improved how to create ideas, this is really important for me as well. I don’t think I have done an outstanding job, but at least I have tried my best. Summer semester is too short that made me really busy.
I am so glad that I took this class in summer semester, and I know would get better and better. I always hope to learn more about what I need to work on it, and do it better or improve myself. I am so exciting about what I still have few more years that I can keep improve myself, and be more competitive in the future.

The most important thing what u learned in this summer

I learned so many things in this summer semester, and it made me so busy because of just short term. Although this semester was so short, I think I learned so many important things in this english1010 class. I learned how to write visual rhetorical analysis, Summary/Strong response, and researched essay. I’ve done analysis, and summary response essay in my 0990 English class, but I think it was just practicing for these 1010 essay. I struggled with these essay so much, but still I didn’t know what do I need to write. However, the peer review thing really helped me to write my papers by getting advice from peers. It helps me a lot and I loved check my paper before turn in the final papers. I could know what did I write wrong, and format, etc. The most important thing is the learning rhetorical strategy. I didn’t understand what that is at first, but I asked someone to figure out what it means. And I know now it is so important thing when we read someone’s essay, and when we write our own essay to persuade someone. Learn what I didn’t know before makes me feels so happy because I am being knowledgeable. This class was so helpful to prove my skills to write, was not good but I feel I improved on my paper, and I felt I have to study hardly in English after see my grade. So I want to say really thank you to teacher~~

What I have learned...

Even though the semester was a bit shorter I have learned something as a writer and as an individual. The warm environment of ESL no longer around it was a challenge to me to learn how to participate in class with native students. I was afraid that a teacher would get annoyed with my accent. When I first try to say something in class that wasn’t the case at all…. I have leaned to be confident about myself and ask a question make comment in class. I also learned that one of the ways to get idea for a paper is to participate in the discussion and to listen. From my writing, I can tell that I made a bit of progress. Especially by being a bit risky (as the teacher told), I get a better paper. The papers that we had to write were really interesting especially the believing and doubting one. A good writer learns to analyze both sides of an argument. From the advertisement paper we also learned to analyze. That was an quite fruitful semester for me.

Let's not kiss asses here

"My education was the liberty I had to read indiscriminately and all the time, with my eyes hanging out." -DYLAN THOMAS.

This is a quote from my favorite Welsh poet, Dylan Thomas. I'm sure your very familiar with his work, Daniel.

This quote pretty much sums up my education through out college. I have become a better writer, mainly, by having a reason to read and write, all of the time. Not to under-mind the importance of a good teacher for guidance, but most of the improvements I made this semester came as a consequence of a lot of reading, writing and hard work.

That is what I learned from this class, that I could become a better writer, by reading and rereading analytically, and writing by writing and revising. Just like with painting, I learned that I can always improve on my writing, by always writing, all the time, with the intent to improve my skills.

English, one of the Best

This English class has truly been the best English i have ever taken. In the past i have to admit it was my most dreaded class, but this was nice, maybe it is that i am now older or that i did a lot preparation before taking the class. I learned that Writing a paper is more then just putting facts on a page, anything that is written is meant to influence others. This has made me look at things that i read much differently. I have gained a sense of appreciation for writers and I am now more exited to read when the opportunity is presented I just hope that all of the collage English teachers will teach like this class was taught. I learned more in this English Class then any before it therefore I must say thank you.

Learning

I learn how to write because I wanted to and not just because I have to. This made all the difference because I had an interest in the subject and it felt like what I was learning about in the process of writing would actually help me in the future. The papers were not on some lame subject the teacher assigned. They were about what I choose and card about. Thru this want, I structured my papers better, my arguments were stronger and it actually felt like I was trying to persuade someone and not just get an assignment done.

I got some good experience in writing papers that were not all structured the same. Unlike my high school English classes where I had to use the same structuring system on every paper that I wrote, which were very boring and seemed to hinder the rhetoric of the paper. That brings up another important thing I have learned, the meaning of rhetoric and how to use it in a paper to make it more persuasive. On that first day of class that word “rhetoric” was completely foreign to me, and how I have learned so much about it.

This class has been very fun and I have learned a lot. Although I have always hated English and writing and probably will for quite some time, what I have learned in this class will make thing a little easier

Important things that I learned in this class

Every aspect that I learned in this class is very useful for learning English well. Therefore, I will take with me all of them, and I'm sure there would use of them in someway. In this class, I think I spent pretty much time than I expected before starting the class. However, spending more time and practicing a lot, I learned many things very well. I did not have any idea about rhetorical writing before. Now I can tell what is logos, pathos, and ethos. Also, doing the blog, sharing the ideas with classmates was really helpful to learn from each other.

What I've Learned

Just like others have said on this matter the thought of taking an English class always I mean always made me give an expression like uhhhh or even booooo. But I have learned a lot about writing that I had known before taking this class.

If I had to say what was the most impact full part of taking this class it would have to be that I learned how to analysis an article or an advertisement in a way that has led to me viewing them in a different light. Being able to test my own beliefs has also been a great lesson I’ve learned in this class. I believe that having the ability to look into a certain problem that may be considered black or white, and being able to leave knowing facts about both sides and being able to make an educated decision on what your opinion would be on the matter is very liberating.

I have enjoyed this class and it has given me a better attitude towards English classes that for years I have thought would be the worst thing I could ever take (besides biology). I am glad that I have been able to take this class. Thanks Daniel for teaching in a way that I could learn from.

The most important thing I have learned..

The most important thing I learned this semester was how to affectively get my points and views across in my papers. In the past I think it has been hard for me to clearly express my opinion on paper. In my mind I was making a clear point and when I was speaking face to face with someone I could get my point across affectively but when it came to my papers it seemed a little iffy. It took a lot for me to take a step back and look at my papers from another point of view and realize that people who will be reading my paper don’t always have the same background as me and don’t always have the same knowledge as me so I need to explain my ideas and points better so anyone can understand. This has been a very good class and I have learned a lot that I think I can apply in all my other classes in the future.

MITL

Finding myself has been hard in previous papers (i.e. high school essays). This college level English class has allowed me to open my mind to the possibilities of writing. I feel I can tell a express my ideas instead of relying solely on the demanded structure posted in and essay. Now that I can express myself more rhetorically the ideas drilled into my head in high school makes so much more sense. Grammar, topic sentences, transitions between sentences to paragraphs. Noticing that my papers now still lack these key ingredients to writing is a relief. I am able to address weakness in my writing and correct it; in return expanding the power of my words.

The word essay still frightens me but not as much. I understand the fear and know how to confront it. If I wallow in the complexity, absorb myself into the topic I will come out with great ideas ready to be placed onto paper.

One more thing that I feel I am taking from this class is how the skills I have learned will apply to my future papers. I will be able to focus on the right topic that interests me. My papers will not only provide information but hopefully will have my own personal spin on them.

Thank you Daniel for teaching me what you did. I finally finished a college English class. 2010/2020 here I come.

The most important thing I have learned

I guess what I learned from the class is that a paper is like a jigsaw puzzle. At the start there is nothing more than an idea, but by the end there is a clear picture, and every piece is important to that picture. It does not matter if that piece is organization, citing, word placement, or rhetoric. Everything is important in some way or another, and nothing in a paper should be taken for granted. This is not anything that Westover directly taught, but what I have learned because of everything that he taught.

Everything from how to organize my papers to being able to analyze a pieces rhetoric has improved thanks to this class. I do not consider myself much of a writer, and I still do not think I am much of one. Although I do think I am a better writer because of this class. This class has been one of the better classes I have taken here at UVU.
I have learned a lot from this class and what I improved on was thinking above and beyond in writing. For some reason i can think outside of the box when it comes to questions and such but always neglected it when putting words onto paper.I've grown to know more about perspective and what my papers should consist of and when. I still have much more work to do and much more to find out but this course has definitely pushed me farther to where I need to be.

What I have learned this summer...

The most important thing I have learned about writing this summer has been how to create ideas, and organize them into words that effectively convey my thoughts to others. This class has helped me learn how to think about things more in depth, as well as look at things from many different perspectives. I have realized that as I write I am able to formulate my own ideas and better understand the ideas of others. This class has helped strengthen me ability to organize my ideas in the most effective writing style of the assignment. For example I now know how to write a paper for future college classes that will be able to catch the interest of my reader and guide them through my ideas. I can now use many tactics in persuasive writing to win the emotion, logic, and trust of my readers. I found the class to be interesting with a teaching style that helped me to understand the material. I am glad that I took this class because it has been interesting to me to learn more about how other people see the world. It will benefit me in the future because of the improvement of my ability to write college level papers.

The Most Important Thing I've Learned

Before this class, whenever I turned in a paper to my teachers, they all said the same thing. That I had good ideas but I didn't present them well enough. This class taught me almost everything about that. I handed in a paper to one of my teachers just recently and he said he liked my thesis statement. That's a big deal for me. Because I learned how to explain things so well, my paragraphs are less choppy, my ideas are more organized, and the most important thing about it is that I get better grades! This class was probably the one I needed the most.

The Most Important Things that I've Learned

Writing was something that I've always wanted to improve on, I felt like I had good ideas, I just had a hard time putting it down on paper. I have learned to be more confident in my writing, to take criticism in a positive way, and to build on what others say about my work. One of my favorite things that we went over in class was rhetorical thinking. I surprised myself with how much I enjoyed analyzin ads and magazines. Learning how to correctly cite others' work has come in handy with my other classes, when I have to write research papers. Taking this class has helped me understand that English is more than just grammatical concepts, it is rhetorical thinking and being able to connect with the story you are reading. I found writing the Argument Research Paper challenging but rewarding. I had fun opening my mind to other's opinions and stating my own opinion. I also learned that my view wasn't always the right or the best view. I learned that there are more than just two different views to a topic and learning that has helped me to respect other's views and see their point of views more effectively.

English 1010

What have I learned from our English class? I have learned a lot of different things. I haven’t taken English for a couple of years so this was a nice review for me. I learned how to use quotes, which I think is very important for every college student to know, especially since all of us will have to take at least one more advanced English class. We will want to go to the class actually knowing what we are doing. I’m sure all the future classes we have to take will require a paper or two. I also enjoyed figuring out how to put my thoughts together, so that my paper doesn’t seem choppy and it flows better. Writing about things that we actually had an interest for was a first for me. It made the class seem a little bit easier, but still being able to apply new skills. I also enjoyed figuring out what peer feedback I should apply to my paper and what I should leave out. Sometimes that’s hard to do since you can get feedback from one person telling you not to change something, but get feedback from another person saying that they hated that part. All in all, I think this class has taught me a lot of different things that I am sure to use in my future college career.

What I Will Take Away

You want me to NOT go on and on about what a great class this was? Okay I'll do my best. However, I can say that I knew, going in, that I was going to love this class. My husband, having thoroughly enjoyed Daniel's class and being the one who encouraged me to make sure that I took it from him. SO, I went in knowing that I would learn a lot! I have always thought of myself as an adequate writer, being able to easily get my ideas on paper, but I was always worried about 'structure structure structure'. In this class I learned that there are so many -different- types of structure, that what I knew before may not be what is important now.

More, I learned how to properly quote in a research paper! This really saved my bacon as I had a simultaneous history class in which I was required to write a research paper. Thankfully, I was able to use everything I had learned in English 1010 and apply it to my history paper! Had I not decided to take this class, at this time, I likely would have bombed my history paper. So, though I learned about structure and how to flow through a paper, and that was important, the –most- important thing I learned was likely the way to put together a research paper properly.

Most Important Thing I Have Learned.

English is not my best subject. I have been very picky in choosing a good English 1010 class and in fact this technically is the 4th one I have taken. I would go to the first few days of the class and feel out the teacher. 2/4 of these classes have been taught by new teachers or fill-ins who are hired on at the University just to teach the class. I never got a good feeling from them and always felt like they were trying to push an agenda on the students in trying to get them to "learn to love writing". Other teachers I felt asked for so much writing in their class that it felt watered down and unfocused. I wanted to learn how to be a better writer, not how to bull crap through 1500 words each class period. I already loved to write, I just needed to learn the skills to tighten up my papers and expand the the content in a way that didn't seem like I was rambling. My papers lacked structure and substance and I learned how to produce both in this class. To sum it up, I really learned how to take my writings to the college level and I appreciate it. It is "College Writing 1010" after all.

Conferences, Papers

Please do come to your conferences today, but if you are just coming to pick up your paper, I'm afraid they are not finished. My sister went into labor yesterday (a month early), and I am her closest relative, so I was at the hospital until about 2 AM when my mother came into town. I will have them for you on Friday. I apologize for the delay.

Lawsuit Waiting To Happen

I'm sorry I hadn't posted until now.  Moving has been much harder then I thought it would be.  But after reading this, even though I had addressed this issue in my 'believing' paper, I wanted to be able to make my own voice heard!

One of the most important things to note is that this is a ban on people who are tattooed working for -the city-.  This isn't about general businesses, but city workers such as police officers, dog catchers, court reporters etc.  It also doesn't say "No Tattoos" it says "No visible tattoos", meaning that a person with a tattoo can cover it up.  Or a person with a facial piercing can take it out.

Granted, it isn't always as easy as that.  After all, anyone with a facial piercing can tell you that it's a pain in the rear to have to take the piercings out and put them back in later or get a spacer for it.  But if you want to work in a "professional" setting, I can completely see where the argument stems from.  Bountiful City is not making it "illegal" to have tattoos - simply banning public city workers from having any visible ink.  IMHO a person with a tattoo is not any different than anyone else.  However, it is not MY humble opinion that matters, it's all the little grey haired ladies who have to call the police man to get her kitty out of the tree.  If he shows up with facial piercings and tattoos visible, she might very well have a heart attack and die.  And that's a lawsuit just waiting to happen!

Joking aside, this policy is not one that is necissarily "bad", though if I was one of the employees that had a visible tattoo already I would likely fear for my job.  It may not be the reason that I was fired, but they could find a way.

In the end, I completely agree that tattoos are protected by freedom of speech - and that everyone has a right to express themselves in whatever manner they choose.  However, if you want to express yourself, and you want to work for the city which already -has- a dress code, just get one that can be covered!
