Should parents who have committed several felonies have their parental rights terminated?

  1. I think that parents that are felons should have their parental rights restricted. The problem is that there aren’t enough foster parents available to take in kids. If the government did do this, then it’s possible that the pre-screening of foster parents would suffer. This in turn means that the kids will suffer, since they might end up being placed in foster homes that are worse than where they were. There are plenty of stories about kids getting abused or raped by their foster parents, so I can only imagine how much more this would happen if their pre-screening process was cut down.
They would need to restructure their whole foster care system. I think that there would need to be some kind of recovery or therapy program available for the parents, so that upon completion of that program, they can then have the option of getting their children back. This process would have to be very in-depth to make sure that the lives of the children are protected.
However, something like this will probably get turned down because the government would need lots of funding to make this happen, and that money would have to come from taxpayers. It seems to me that problems like this get buried under the rug all too often. Because most of the families that have felonies are lower class, they usually aren’t connected to the right people who are able to make this happen.
People need to also understand that just because someone makes a mistake and gets convicted of a felony, that doesn’t automatically mean they are evil people. Someone could have lost their job and be unable to feed their family so they had to rob someone in order to get money or food to provide for their families. Desperation brings out the worst in a lot of us.
