Problematic, Arguable Question

Should legal driving age stay at 16?

  1. More and more students are graduating high school at the age of 16 and are going straight into college. If the legal driving age were to be changed to 18 like I hear so many people suggesting; these students that could have been very successful might end up without a college education if they can not find a way to school.

I am 16 years old. For the first few months I was attending school here at UVU, I was still in drivers ed. My mom drove me to each class, picking me up just to drop me off again later. If I couldn't drive now at this age, I wouldn't be able to attend college. And already being done with high school, who knows if I would ever consider going back to school when I was able to drive?

Driving is such a deep part of our culture, especially here in Utah. If we can not find a parking space, we go do something else. In Germany, the legal driving age is 18, however the drinking age is 16 years old. While I was in Germany, my teacher told me that it is at the age 16, not just because of culture and history, but to bring the families closer together. To sit around and be able to have a discussion, to play cards. Driving is very similar to us here. We don't have trains going anywhere and everywhere like they do. Instead we have huge roads.

I will admit that teenagers tend to be bad drivers. However a lot of that is because they are new drivers. No matter what age someone starts driving at, they will still be beginners. It is not just immaturity; you also have to develop the feel for the size and shape of the vehicle. That takes time for anybody to master.

Driving is how we live. It is how we get around. There are different laws in different places. But here, we have this one, and it fits quite nicely with our lifestyle.
