Problematic, Arguable Question

Should students get denied financial aid because their parents make too much money?

  1. I can see the point of view of a student, 18 and older, an adult as far as the world is concerned, on one’s own and providing for one ’s self, wanting financial help in schooling just like everyone else, regardless of a parent or guardians income. Many students I’m sure, fall into this category, who are denied of government financial aid because of coming from a home that falls in the above average category of monetary income. Many of these students may be receiving little or no help from their parents, which may hinder their ability to attend school, a disadvantage compared to some other students.
I can also see the point of view of those students who come from homes with parents that fall into a below average income level. If it were not for financial aid, they may have no other alternatives to turn to for help with school funding. If more students were granted this government aid, it may use up more of the total funding to be given by the government, and thus giving these students less funding than they are currently being given. A high percentage of these students may be those that come from impoverished homes where there is not always an example nor atmosphere of goals to pursue a higher education. This government funding, whether present or lacking may play a large role in the life direction of these students.
It is not an easy line to draw for so many different students with so many different circumstances. In an ideal world financial aid would be able to be given out on a case by case basis, but that is easier said than done. I think that financial aid should be given to those who have nowhere else to turn for their school funding. I also think that there should be more options and programs to help those students who come from wealthier families. Tax breaks and other government incentives given to parents helping children through school may be of great help to these students.
