Question

Are mandatory minimums for crimes like drug possession just when many violent crimes don't carry such strict punishments?

  1. Interesting, I was just thinking about this. I recently stumble across some facts about privately owned prisons in America. Two of the three big companies in the prison industry where recently listed in Forbes Magazine's 200 most profitable companies. To make a profit these companies need keep there prisons at least 95% full, but all of them are filled beyond capacity. The increase in the number of people incarcerated for nonviolent, victimless crimes is proportional to the increase of private prisons in the U.S. Something about that smells funky to me.
