Problematic Question

Should teaching about contraceptives be allowed in high school, or should we primarily advocate abstinence?

  1. I believe teaching teenagers the truth about sex is more important than teaching them about reading, writing, and arithmetics. A lack of understanding in the consequences and rewards of sex can be much more damaging to a teenager's life than a lack of understanding in math. Promoting abstinence is fine, but not teaching teenagers the truth about sex is dangerous.

  3. I think that teaching about contraceptives in high school should be allowed. I think that it should be granted as an option for the student and his or her parents not as a requirement. Teenagers need to know the facts and dangers about sex whether that be in a class room setting or a parent talking to their child, it needs to be discussed. I think that too many people today don't know the dangers about sex and they end up in an undesirable and unplanned situation. I think that correctly teaching teenagers about sex is a must in today's world but I think that it is up to the parents on how their children should be taught. It would be unwise to pretend that sex doesn't exist, because it does and under the right circumstances I believe that it is a great thing. Unfortunately many people stay niave about sex and other related topics and that will most likely hurt them in the end.

  4. I think that teaching contraceptives in High School would be a very wise thing to do. Teens are having sex whether they are in sex education or not. People cannot just simply stick their heads in the sand and pretend that if they don’t talk about sex it won’t happen. Anyone who thinks otherwise is being ignorant, as a society I believe we have at least some responsibility to be there for each other and protect one another, we need to protect are young adults from teen pregnancy and STDs the best way to do this is to educate teens in a controlled environment like a classroom. Growing up in Utah and going through the public school system here I saw the negative effects of my peers not being properly educated in the practice of safe sex. I feel grateful that my parents were very open and were able to teach me how to protect myself but most people around here are not so lucky. I can understand some people are against sex education because they believe it is a parents own responsibility and right to teach their children about sex, but the unfortunate truth is most parents that use that argument will never educate their children themselves. I think at the least they should offer a class teaching contraceptive use so teens at least have the opportunity to take a class and be properly educated. Until we do something in Utah’s public school system to educated teens I believe our teen pregnancy rate and number of people contracting STDs will just continue to rise.
