Problematic Question

Should the legal drinking age be lowered to 18?

  1. The legal drinking age, as it is, is 21 which I think is a good thing, but I have always liked the idea of prohibition, too bad it didn't last, not just with alcohol but with all controlled substances like alcohol. I am not saying that there is no place for alcohol, in-fact there are many good and us-full things you can do with alcohol. It is just that you hear, every year, of the tragedies from the use of such things in an inappropriate manor. The people that drive drunk, with no regard that there is potential that they are impaired. Many times I think that if those substances that impair where not available, through any channel, then the opportunity for accidents would be significantly less, life would have less tragedy, and would be better all around. Really I don't understand why people like alcohol so much, I have see some people do the stupidest thing when they have been drinking, for that reason I have never tried the stuff. In any case I don't think that any one should be given the opportunity to place others, or themselves, at risk. The human brain is delicate at that early age is still in the final stages of growth and development, more pron to be damaged. I hear it may be fun but in my opinion it is not worth it, the age is set for a good reason leave it as is. Or we could even make alcohol a controlled prescription only drug, I really like that idea better then others I have heard. I hope that all of you who do drink, or think the law unfair, will forgive my views on this topic.

  2. This is a very interesting response, and I understand where you are coming from. However, consider that people act irresponsibly with things like drivers licenses, guns, prescription drugs, and even food. Simply by getting behind the wheel of a car you can be putting yourself and others at risk, sober or not. The question then becomes, how to make sure that people are -responsible- when acting. There are ways to drink responsibly after all. Perhaps teaching children that, as with birth control, there are safe ways to drink rather then simply 'don't do it' is the way to go.

As for prohibition - in my mind, it is the same as saying 'don't do that no no' to people. Particularly younger people, that will end up wanting to do it all the more because 'big brother' said 'no'. After all, look what happened with prohibition when it WAS in effect!

    Thank you for your reply!

  3. My belief is that there is no way to drink responsibly at any age, and definitely when at the age of 18, when most people aren’t responsible to begin with. There are a lot of things that can happen when you get drunk, because you judgment is nonexistent and you are probably going to do things that you normally wouldn’t do. You might say that you are only going to have one drink, and one drink is not going the do anything. That’s true for pretty much everyone, but is one drink always going to be enough. It’s like saying that you are only going to have one cookie, but you end up eating a lot more than that. What are you going to do when one drink is not enough, are you going to continue to your second, third, or forth drink? By that time you can not say that you are responsible and not impaired and have it mean anything.

Are you really being responsible when you are stressing your liver, damaging your heart and brain, and degrading your overall health? Alcohol contributes to, or causes so many ill affects that it is not even worth the momentary relaxation, or a social experience. Some of the risks involved with drinking are life threatening to you or someone around you. It is unfair to that other person that you might hurt if you do something stupid while being drunk, and no one wants to live with that pain.

If this is a matter of responsibly than no one, no matter how old they are, should drink. The risks immensely out weigh the gain and it is not worth getting drunk when so much could be ruined.

  4. As far as I am concerned, I think the legal drinking age should be lowered to 18. In Taiwan, the illegal drinking age is under 18, Japan is under 20 and United States is under 21. However, I don’t know what the difference between these three is. Everyone suppose to being a freshman in college when they are 18, they should have right to try the alcohol. They are not high school student anymore, so many fresh things they may interested in and they should try. Some people may say that they are only 18 years old; they don’t know how to control themselves well. Furthermore, they may abuse the alcohol because they are not mature enough, they are still a kid. What if they are drunk, horrible some things could happen if they drink irresponsibly. In fact, there is no difference between 18 to 21 for me, both age are college students, isn’t it? What I think is that the point is not the person in the drinking age, but people who drink is responsible or not. There are too many sad things happen because of alcohol, such as drunk driving. However, this is not relate to drinkers’ age, it is about how does people who take responsibility. For example, I had a party when I was in Taiwan and everyone drank alcohol. After the party, everyone got drunk badly, especially me. I really can’t drink. What did I do? I just fall into sleep every time when I get drunk. One of my uncle who is so annoying while he is drunk; he sings, stream, and even cry some times. I mean I was only 19 years old, but I didn’t do anything regrettably. However, my uncle is like 45 years old, he still do something funny or annoying when he is drunk. Therefore, I think it is fine if the legal drinking age is lowered to 18. I think the drunken trouble is not related to age, it relates to self- control of who drinks.
